Report for week of 10-19

Surround Sound Processor Project

Benjamin Malcolm - brmvwf@umr.edu, Craig Wilson - cmw343@umr.edu, Ben Loehr - bjloeh@umr.edu Alan Kelsay - mkelsay@umr.edu

Software Demo Scheduled with Dr. McCracken Wednesday at 4pm.

Things to do for 11-2 meeting:

- Review Schematics and draw up our own schematics

- Work on code

- Attend software demo

10-19 Meeting Results:

- Made significant progress on 8051 code. We worked out most of the startup and initialization values.

- Gained a general understanding of the schematics Dr. McCracken gave us.

- Discussed the specifications of the 8051 microcontroller needed to accomplish the task.

- The group now has a website at: sparkchaser.150m.com. It is still in the works.

Things to do for 10-26 meeting:

- Get Code example

- Get Example schematic

- Get preliminary schematic drawn

- Get preliminary code written

Report for week of 10-19

Code meeting 3:00 Sunday 10-24

Things to do for 10-26 meeting:
Get Code example
Get Example schematic
Get preliminary schematic drawn
Get preliminary code written

10-19 Meeting Results:

Optical Hardware:
- Use a 3.5 mm Mini Plug or “toslink”
- optical hardware is expensive
- digital inputs eliminate need for A/D converter
- rated only for distances up to 10 meters (useful for short distances)
- unaffected by noise
            Vendors for Optical Hardware
Sharp
Various other manufacturers

Sunday – Start Code
Power on / initialization
o Set variables on NJU
o Set variables on AKN
o Use extra memory to save user settings and load from mem
o Configure clocks (nju,lr,bck)
Interrupts
o Remote control button press
o Button to change settings
o Volume change
-     Main Loop
Send encodes signal from AKN to nju
            Read akn for signal type
            Set signal type in nju
            Decode signal
Send decoded signals from nju to akn
            Output decoded signals to speakers

Additionally, we completed a flow diagram for the code.

Things to do for 10-19 meeting:

Everyone:  Get schematic from McCracken.

Alan / Craig – Software outline / plan etc.

The Bens – Look for parts for Project
                        -optical hardware
                        -various part vendors
                        -Look through data sheets

Report for week of 10-12

Things to do for 10-13 meeting:

Alan – optical inputs
Craig – how decoder communicates with SSIC thing
malcolm – Softmute
            Mute on decoder chip
            Figure out pins 23 through 44 (ak4586)
Loehr – Figure out pins 1 through 22 on SSIC (ak4586)

Meeting 10-13 at 4:45 at physics computer lab

Meeting with McCracken 10-12 – check door for time

Results:

Alan found that the inputs are controlled by a register at address 01h.  Writing to this register selects which input to pass through to the DSP.  This could be done from the microprocessor.  The same process is used in the 8 channel output version of the audio codec given to us to use.  The registers used in the AK4588 are 02h and 03h.

Dr. McCracken will supply us with a sample schematic.  We should wait until we see schematic to figure out communication between the two chips.  Initial analysis shows that the communication between the chips isn’t very complicated.  Software will constitute the bulk of the work.

Softmute function was explored.  We learned that both chips have a softmute function.

Explored the needed power supply voltages.

Optical Signal and Coax Preamble to SSIC:
-SSIC reads preamble and stores in register
-have 8051 read register and forward to decoder
            -Decoder chip has automatic detection
-find out how SSIC handles preamble

Clock uses SSIC internal clock (MCK0).

Things to do for 10-19 meeting:

Everyone:  Get schematic from McCracken.

Alan / Craig – Software outline / plan etc.

The Bens – Look for parts for Project
                        -optical hardware
                        -various part vendors
